Jerald P. Fahey, a 51-year-old man from Springfield, Illinois, was fatally shot on the night of April 1, 2025. The incident occurred after a traffic accident in the 2000 block of North Dirksen Parkway. Fahey had reportedly arrived at the scene in response to a call from an injured woman he knew. Upon approaching the other driver involved in the accident, an altercation ensued, leading to the shooting. Officers responding to the crash reported hearing gunshots near the McDonald's drive-thru and discovered Fahey on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.
An autopsy conducted by the Sangamon County Coroner confirmed that Fahey died from multiple gunshot wounds. The Springfield Police Department launched an investigation into the incident, which led to the arrest of 46-year-old Nicholas J. Kammueller of Rochester, Illinois. Kammueller, identified as the driver involved in the accident, was taken into custody at the scene. He faces multiple charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated discharge of a firearm, driving under the influence, and carrying a concealed firearm while intoxicated. He is currently being held at the Sangamon County Jail, awaiting formal charges from the Sangamon County State’s Attorney’s Office.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The Springfield Police Department has urged anyone with additional information to come forward. The case remains active as law enforcement officials work to piece together the events leading up to Fahey’s death.
