The death of 22-year-old Black male Roosevelt 'Rosie' Keyron Lewis III occurred on March 24, 2025, following a violent altercation at an apartment complex in Osceola, Indiana. Deputies from the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of gunfire at the Arbors at Riverbend Apartments around 2:43 p.m. Upon arrival, law enforcement discovered Lewis lying on the ground suffering from at least one gunshot wound to the chest.
He was transported to Elkhart General Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death as homicide.
The investigation revealed that the shooting allegedly stemmed from a narcotics transaction gone wrong. According to court documents, Lewis's girlfriend had arranged for him to purchase marijuana from an acquaintance. Witnesses reported observing a white SUV pull up to the residence where Lewis was waiting outside. An argument reportedly ensued between the men, during which a witness heard a threat shouted from the vehicle. The driver then allegedly extended his arm out of the window and fired shots at Lewis before fleeing the scene. Although Lewis was found in possession of a handgun, authorities determined it had not been fired during the incident.
Police identified the suspect as 20-year-old Daqwan Jackson-Burnett of Elkhart. Investigators utilized surveillance footage to track the suspect's vehicle, a white SUV, leaving the complex. A tip later led deputies to the vehicle, which had been abandoned in a wooded area; a search of the SUV revealed the odor of marijuana and registration linking it to a relative of the suspect. Further searches of a residence associated with Jackson-Burnett yielded firearm accessories, including a holster and magazine consistent with the 5.7 caliber shell casing found at the crime scene.
Daqwan Jackson-Burnett was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Lewis's death. Legal proceedings have faced delays, with court records indicating that a trial status conference was postponed in October 2025 following the entry of a new attorney for the defense. Jackson-Burnett remains in custody as the case moves through the Elkhart County court system, with prosecutors relying on witness testimony, digital communications arranging the meeting, and forensic evidence linking him to the shooting.
