The Hispanic woman, fifty-nine-year-old Lorraine Reyna from Whiting, Indiana, was a beloved mother and grandmother known for her nurturing spirit and willingness to help others. On the early morning of March 30, 2025, she was present at the Portside Pub located at 1516 Indianapolis Boulevard in the neighboring city of Hammond. What began as a social outing turned into a tragedy when a domestic disturbance erupted outside the establishment.
Reports indicated that a man and his girlfriend had been arguing in a vehicle in the parking lot, a dispute that allegedly stemmed from the man losing a significant amount of money at a nearby casino earlier that night.
Witnesses observed the altercation escalating physically, prompting bystanders to intervene. Reyna, along with twenty-five-year-old Paul Emigdio Olivares, stepped in to assist the woman involved in the conflict, attempting to defuse the volatile situation. In response to their efforts to help, the aggressor retrieved a firearm and unleashed a barrage of gunfire. He reportedly fired dozens of rounds, targeting his girlfriend as she fled into the bar and indiscriminately striking those who had attempted to come to her aid.
Lorraine Reyna and Paul Olivares were both struck by the gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. Three other individuals sustained serious injuries during the chaotic event and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The assailant fled the area immediately after the shooting, leaving behind a scene of devastation. Law enforcement officers arrived at the pub around 4:15 a.m. to find the entrance riddled with bullet holes and multiple victims inside.
Following an immediate investigation, authorities identified the suspect as thirty-one-year-old Caprice Edward Cashaw of Merrillville, Indiana. Cashaw was taken into custody shortly after the incident. Prosecutors charged him with two counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder, with sentence enhancements added for the use of a firearm in the commission of the crimes. He was held without bond as the community mourned the loss of two individuals who had lost their lives while acting as Good Samaritans.
