In a quiet New Albany, Indiana neighborhood, a Tuesday evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire that would leave one man dead and a community in shock. Antonio Bautista, a 24-year-old male, was fatally shot on April 15, 2025, near the intersection of Wolfe Trace Court and Wolfe Trace. When officers from the New Albany Police Department arrived at the scene around 8:10 p.m., they found Antonio suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The tragedy was compounded by the fact that the alleged shooter was Antonio's own younger brother, 19-year-old Andres Bautista. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an altercation between the two siblings. Andres was taken into custody at the scene. A neighbor captured video footage of Andres surrendering to the police, emerging from his house with his hands raised.
In the chaotic moments of the shooting, a 70-year-old woman who was out walking her dog was also struck by gunfire. She was transported to a hospital in Louisville and was reported to be in stable condition. The stray bullet that hit the innocent bystander underscored the recklessness of the violence that had erupted.
Following his arrest, Andres Bautista was charged with murder and aggravated battery. According to court documents, Andres claimed to witnesses that he shot his brother because Antonio was trying to rob him. This claim was echoed in a statement he made to police, where he said, 'I did what I had to do. I was in fear for my life.' However, police noted that Antonio was found to have been shot twice, once in the face and once in the back of the head, and no weapon was found near his body. Security camera footage from a nearby home captured Andres leaving his residence just before multiple gunshots were heard. The footage then reportedly shows him going back into the home and he can be heard saying, 'Call the cops. I killed him. He's over there on the ground.' The case was handed over to Floyd County prosecutors for further investigation.
