In the quiet community of Watkinsville, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded that left family and friends mourning the loss of a well-known local businessman. Douglas Wayde Oldham, a 64-year-old Caucasian man, was found deceased on March 24, 2025, at a residence off Mars Hill Road. Born in Athens, Georgia, on September 17, 1960, Oldham had spent most of his life in Oconee County, where he was a devoted father and had been a loving husband for over three decades.
The series of events leading to
the discovery began when a concerned family member requested a wellness check after an unusual lack of contact. When an Oconee County sheriff's deputy arrived at the home, he witnessed Oldham's 28-year-old son, Mitchell Oldham, entering the residence. As the deputy approached the front of the house, he discovered Douglas Oldham's body near the entrance.
Given the uncertain and potentially dangerous situation, the deputy called for backup to secure the area. Attempts to make contact with anyone inside the home were unsuccessful. The Athens-Clarke County Strategic Response Team was then dispatched to the scene. Utilizing a drone to assess the interior of the residence, they located Mitchell Oldham, who was also deceased from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has since begun an investigation into the deaths, which they are treating as an apparent murder-suicide. While the investigation remains active, authorities have not released further details. The community has been left to grapple with the sudden and tragic loss of a man described as having a quiet strength and unwavering integrity. Oldham was the founder of Doug Oldham's Wrecker Service, a business he established in 1991. He was also a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and various local gun clubs. He is survived by his two daughters, grandchildren, the mother of his children, and his sister.
