The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 3:49 a.m., when Long Beach police responded to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon on the 5400 block of Atlantic Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered Calderon suffering from a gunshot wound to his upper body.

Calderon, a resident of Hawthorne, was known for his vibrant personality and deep passion for martial arts, football, and music. Following an extensive investigation, Long Beach homicide detectives identified 24-year-old Malik Cooper, a resident of Compton, as the primary suspect in Calderon’s murder. Cooper was arrested on April 28, 2025, during a traffic stop in Compton. He was booked for murder and is currently being held on a $2 million bail. Authorities have not yet determined the motive behind the shooting, and it remains under investigation. It is unclear whether Calderon and Cooper had any prior connection.
The case is expected to be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
