In the early morning hours of March 3, 2020, the life of 28-year-old Tevaughn Jordan Porter, a Black male from Lebanon, Kentucky, was tragically cut short. Porter was discovered outside a residence on Oak Street in Lebanon, having sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Emergency services, including the Kentucky State Police and the Lebanon Police Department, were dispatched to the scene, but Porter was pronounced dead by the Marion County Coroner.
The investigation into Porter's death quickly
led to a suspect. Before succumbing to his injuries at Springview Hospital, Porter identified 21-year-old Treyvon Downs as the person who had shot him. This crucial piece of information, provided during a 911 call made by another individual at the scene, set the course for the ensuing investigation. Kentucky State Police Detective B.J. Burton located and apprehended Downs, also a resident of Lebanon.
During questioning, Downs claimed that Porter had attempted to rob him and that he had acted in self-defense, wrestling the gun away from Porter and shooting him as he fled. However, text messages between the two men revealed they had arranged to meet for a drug transaction involving Xanax.
Treyvon Downs was arrested and lodged in the Marion County Detention Center, charged with murder. Despite his claims of self-defense during the subsequent trial, a jury found him guilty of the murder of Tevaughn Porter. The case brought to light the violent end to a planned drug deal and left a lasting impact on the Lebanon community, which mourned the loss of a young life.
