On April 7, 2025, Marlon López, a Nicaraguan man, was fatally shot in northwest Miami-Dade, Florida. The incident occurred near the intersection of Northwest 27th Avenue and 30th Street, where López was accompanying 27-year-old Venezuelan mother Jeankerly María Linares Marín to a food truck after her work shift at La Nueva Alameda restaurant. Surveillance footage captured the assailant, identified as 70-year-old Luis Montero Moncada, approaching the pair and opening fire at close range.
Linares died at the scene, while López was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Moncada, known to frequent the restaurant where Linares worked, had reportedly developed an obsessive fixation on her. Surveillance video from earlier that day showed Moncada watching Linares for hours inside the restaurant. Witnesses and coworkers noted his unsettling behavior, describing instances where he would become verbally aggressive if he saw her interacting with other men.
Following the shooting, Moncada fled the scene. Law enforcement tracked him to an Extended Stay hotel on NW 7th Avenue and 69th Street. As deputies attempted to apprehend him, Moncada opened fire, prompting a shootout in which he was killed. A firearm was recovered from his vehicle. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office continues to examine the double homicide.
The tragic deaths of Marlon López and Jeankerly Linares have left their communities in mourning. Linares, who had emigrated from Venezuela just seven months prior, was a dedicated mother of two, striving to provide a better life for her children. Her family has initiated a fundraising campaign to cover funeral expenses and support her children in the wake of this senseless violence.
