Christopher Allan Miyose, a 31-year-old man from Wahiawa, Hawaii, tragically lost his life on May 16, 2024, in a fatal shooting at an illegal gambling establishment. Miyose, who was born in Honolulu on January 30, 1993, was involved in an attempted robbery at the game room alongside two other individuals. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:30 p.m. at 216 Walker Ave., where Miyose and his two accomplices entered the establishment wearing dark hooded jackets and pants.
Shortly after their entry, a 20-year-old man, later identified as Alize Ou, opened fire on all three individuals.
Miyose sustained multiple gunshot wounds and succumbed to his injuries at the scene. His accomplices, Travis Key and Lawrence Maneafaiga-Cunningham, were also shot, with Key suffering four gunshot wounds before losing consciousness. When Key regained awareness, he found Miyose deceased on the floor and the game room abandoned. Key later reported that upon exiting the establishment, he was assaulted by an unknown group of individuals. The suspect, Ou, and other patrons fled before law enforcement arrived.
Following the incident, Ou was indicted by an Oahu grand jury on multiple charges, including first-degree attempted murder, second-degree murder, and second-degree attempted murder. The indictment alleged that Ou took deliberate actions to cause the deaths of Miyose and Key, although Key survived. Due to the involvement of multiple victims, Ou faced first-degree attempted murder charges, which carry a life sentence without the possibility of parole. Additionally, he was charged with three counts of firearm-related offenses.
Honolulu Prosecutor Steve Alm emphasized the dangers associated with illegal game rooms, stating that such establishments attract armed thieves, drug dealers, and prostitution. He affirmed that law enforcement would continue efforts to prosecute individuals involved in illegal gambling operations and utilize nuisance abatement laws to shut down such venues. Ou was formally charged on May 26, 2024, and was held on a $1 million bail. He surrendered to authorities at the main Honolulu Police Department station, where he was subsequently arrested.
The case highlighted the risks associated with underground gambling operations and the violent consequences that can arise from criminal activities within these environments. Miyose's death served as a stark reminder of the perils linked to illicit enterprises and the broader implications for community safety.
