In the late afternoon of February 11, 2025, a burst of violence in a public space tragically cut short the life of 17-year-old Hispanic male Abraham Steve Carranza Maravilla of Englewood, Colorado. The incident unfolded around 3:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dayton RTD Light Rail Station in Greenwood Village. When police officers arrived at the scene near Interstate 225 and South Boston Street, they discovered two victims.
Abraham had sustained a gunshot wound, and a 14-year-old boy had been injured in an apparent assault. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention.
Abraham Carranza Maravilla succumbed to his injuries the following day, and his death was officially ruled a homicide by the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office. The 14-year-old who was assaulted was treated for his injuries and later released. Witnesses at the light rail station reported seeing several suspects fleeing the area immediately after the shooting and assault. The Greenwood Village Police Department, with assistance from Denver and Aurora police, launched a thorough investigation into what they described as an isolated incident, assuring the public that the station was safe. The investigation led to the identification of three individuals believed to be responsible for the death of Abraham.
The first breakthrough in the case came on February 20, when a juvenile male suspect was taken into custody following a period of surveillance. The investigative efforts continued, leading to the arrest of a second suspect, 18-year-old Kaleb Witt, on March 7. A third suspect, another 17-year-old male, was apprehended on March 11. Both of these later arrests were made in Denver, and searches of their residences resulted in the seizure of multiple firearms. With the three suspects in custody, investigators announced their belief that all individuals involved in the incident had been apprehended and that there were no further outstanding suspects. The investigation into the motive and the specific roles of each suspect remains ongoing.
