Ericka Leonor Aleman, a six-week-old infant, tragically lost her life on October 8, 1980, in Muleshoe, Bailey County, Texas. She was murdered by her cousin, Diana Lumbrera, who was later identified as a serial killer responsible for the deaths of multiple children, including six of her own. Lumbrera systematically suffocated her victims over a span of 14 years, often rushing them to the hospital after they had already died and blaming medical staff for their inability to resuscitate them.
The case initially raised concerns about "crib death," but suspicions grew as the pattern of deaths continued. Eventually, authorities uncovered the truth, leading to Lumbrera's arrest on May 5, 1990. She was convicted and sentenced to life in prison in both Texas and Kansas in 1991. During her trial, Lumbrera claimed that a former mother-in-law had placed a curse on her, causing all of her children to die young. However, forensic evidence and investigative findings confirmed that she had deliberately suffocated her victims.
Ericka Leonor Aleman was laid to rest in Bovina Cemetery, Parmer County, Texas. Her paternal grandmother is also buried in the same cemetery. According to records, there is no marker at her gravesite. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death remain a stark reminder of the horrors inflicted by Lumbrera, whose actions devastated multiple families and led to significant legal consequences.
