On February 13, 1978, 2½-month-old Hispanic male infant Luis Garza died under suspicious circumstances in Friona, Texas. His mother, Diana Lumbrera, claimed that Luis had experienced convulsions and stopped breathing. She brought him to Parmer County Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Initially, the cause of death was listed as undetermined, and no autopsy was performed. At the time, medical professionals did not suspect foul play, and the death was considered natural.
Luis was the second of several children who died while under Diana Lumbrera's care between 1976 and 1990. Over this 14-year period, six of her own children and one niece died, all before reaching the age of five. Each death was initially attributed to natural causes, such as heart failure or asphyxia due to aspiration. However, patterns began to emerge, as Diana was the sole witness to the children's convulsions and was the one who brought them to medical facilities, often after it was too late for resuscitation.
The turning point came with the death of her 4-year-old son, José Antonio Lumbrera, in Garden City, Kansas, on May 1, 1990. Unlike previous cases, medical staff observed signs consistent with smothering, such as petechiae on the face and eyelids. This prompted an investigation that uncovered life insurance policies taken out on each child, with amounts ranging from $3,000 to $5,000. In some cases, policies were purchased shortly before the child's death. These findings led to suspicions that financial gain was a motive behind the deaths.
Diana Lumbrera was arrested in Kansas on May 5, 1990, and charged with the murder of José Antonio. She was convicted on October 3, 1990, and sentenced to life imprisonment. Subsequent investigations in Texas led to her being indicted for the deaths of other children, including Luis Garza. In 1991, she was found guilty of first-degree murder for the deaths of Melissa, Melinda, and Christopher Daniel, receiving additional life sentences. She is currently serving her sentences in a Texas prison.
