The cause of her death was determined to be a combination of being bludgeoned and strangled. The discovery of her body launched a homicide investigation that would span several years and cross state lines.
From the early stages of the investigation, suspicion fell upon Julia's husband, Timothy Dawson. Investigators learned that the couple's marriage was troubled and that Julia had been contemplating divorce. Just days after she went missing, Timothy transferred a significant amount of money from their joint bank account to his personal account. Despite being the primary suspect, an immediate arrest was not made, and the case continued to be built by law enforcement. In the months following his wife's murder, Timothy Dawson moved with their young son to Texas, where he remarried and started a new life.
The persistent efforts of investigators finally led to a breakthrough in January 2008. An arrest warrant was issued for Timothy Dawson, and he was taken into custody in Texas for the murder of his wife. He was subsequently extradited back to Michigan to stand trial.
