Jeffrey Askren, a 30-year-old man, was reported missing on May 1, 1984, after failing to arrive at his workplace in Santa Clara, California. His red 1978 Honda Accord was discovered parked on Winton Road, east of West Point in Calaveras County, a location eerily close to the infamous Wilseyville serial killings. The vehicle was reportedly seen in the area as early as April 25, 1984. Askren had made overnight reservations at an inn in Sutter Creek for April 23, 1984, but he never checked in.
