Lee Anthony Bugay, a 27-year-old man, was found beaten to death on February 21, 1991, in the Courtney Campbell Mangroves near Tampa, Florida. His body was discovered on the beach, and investigators determined that he had suffered fatal head injuries, likely inflicted by a tire iron or a pipe. Bugay had been reported missing the previous morning, and his vehicle was later found at a nearby boat ramp.
Authorities took plaster casts of footprints and tire tracks at the crime scene in an effort to identify the perpetrator.
The investigation led to Edwin Bernard Kaprat III, who was later charged with Bugay’s murder. Kaprat had used Bugay’s credit card to purchase gas, which raised suspicions. Shortly after the crime, Kaprat fled to New Jersey, where he turned himself in on March 9, 1991. Despite his confession, authorities lacked sufficient evidence to pursue the murder charge. However, in August of that year, Kaprat was found guilty of using Bugay’s credit card and was sentenced to house arrest, which he served at his parents’ home in Florida. He was later jailed for violating the terms of his house arrest but was released on May 7, 1993.
Kaprat would go on to commit additional violent crimes, earning the nickname "The Granny Killer" due to his pattern of targeting elderly victims. His criminal activities escalated, including arson and sexual assault, leading to multiple convictions. He was ultimately sentenced to death for two murders and was later killed in prison during a dispute with another inmate.
Bugay’s murder remains a significant case in the history of violent crimes in Florida, highlighting the challenges of securing convictions when physical evidence is insufficient. Despite Kaprat’s confession, the lack of concrete proof prevented authorities from formally convicting him of Bugay’s killing.
