Laurie Ann Pentland, a 23-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was found deceased in Salem, Oregon, in November of 1992. It is believed she was killed on the night of November 8th or in the early hours of November 9th. Her body was discovered behind an east Salem store. Initially, investigators had no leads as to who was responsible for her death, which was determined to be caused by strangulation.
The case remained unsolved for a period, part of a string of murders of vulnerable women across
the Pacific Northwest. Ultimately, Laurie's death was linked to Keith Hunter Jesperson, a long-haul truck driver who came to be known as the "Happy Face Killer." Jesperson preyed on women between 1990 and 1995, often targeting sex workers and transient individuals. His preferred method of murder was strangulation, and he would often leave his victims' bodies in remote locations.
Jesperson gained his notorious nickname by sending taunting, anonymous confessions to authorities and the media, signing them with a smiley face. According to Jesperson's confession regarding Laurie Pentland, he had engaged her as a sex worker and a dispute arose when she allegedly tried to charge him double the agreed-upon price. He claimed that when she threatened to call the police, he strangled her to death. His confessions and the forensic evidence gathered from his various crime scenes were crucial in securing his convictions for multiple murders, including that of Laurie Ann Pentland. Keith Hunter Jesperson was apprehended in 1995, which brought an end to his killing spree that claimed the lives of at least eight women. He is currently serving multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole at the Oregon State Penitentiary.
