In the late autumn of 1993, a grim discovery was made in Brunswick, Georgia, that would unravel a tale of a string of brutal killings. On November 29, the body of 52-year-old Essie Marie Dowdy, an African American woman, was found in Greenwood Cemetery. Her death was not an isolated incident but one of several violent crimes that had cast a shadow of fear over the community.
Investigators diligently worked the case, and their efforts eventually led them to a man named Carl Harris. During questioning, Harris confessed to the murder of Essie Marie Dowdy. His confession, however, did not stop there. He also admitted to the murders of Cheryl Lewrisey Coleman and her infant son, Jamaree Coleman. The details of their final moments were harrowing; Cheryl and her baby were last seen getting into Harris's vehicle. He took them to a secluded area where he ended Cheryl's life. Her remains were later located near Academy Creek.
Tragically, next to her body was her baby's empty carrier. Harris admitted to the police that he had left the infant by the creek, a confession that sealed the baby's fate and painted a fuller picture of Harris's depravity. The series of brutal and senseless killings had come to an end with his capture.
