On April 28, 1908, a devastating fire consumed the farmhouse of Belle Gunness in La Porte, Indiana, resulting in the deaths of her three children, including 9-year-old white female Lucy Bergleot Sorenson. Lucy's charred remains, along with those of her siblings—11-year-old Myrtle Sorenson and 5-year-old Philip Gunness—were discovered in the basement of the burned-out home.
