Peter Gunness, a 30-year-old white male, met his untimely death on December 16, 1902, in La Porte County, Indiana. His cause of death was a fractured skull and subdural hemorrhage, reportedly caused by an auger from a sausage grinder that fell from a shelf and struck him on the head. Gunness had married Belle Gunness earlier that year, on April 1, 1902. His death was officially recorded as an accident, but suspicions soon arose regarding the circumstances surrounding it.
