In April of 1902, Peter Gunness, a male local butcher and recent widower, married Belle Gunness in La Porte, Indiana. This union, however, was short-lived and ended in his untimely death eight months later under highly suspicious circumstances. The community was unsettled by the strange and tragic events that seemed to follow Belle, who had moved to La Porte after a series of mysterious deaths and fires in Chicago.
