On July 16, 1904, in La Porte County, Indiana, a male hired hand named Thomas Lindboe disappeared under mysterious circumstances after leaving Chicago to work on a farm. He had been employed by a wealthy widow, Belle Gunness, who owned a property on McClung Road. Lindboe was one of many men who traveled to the Gunness farm, often carrying their life savings or intending to marry the proprietress, only to vanish without a trace shortly after their arrival.
