Steven Bernard McClendon, a 2-year-old African American boy, tragically lost his life on October 8, 1974, in Fort Worth, Texas. He was one of five victims in a horrific mass murder committed by 26-year-old Kenneth Granviel, a family acquaintance and convicted rapist. The victims included Steven's mother, 22-year-old Laura McClendon; her sister, 24-year-old Martha McClendon; their cousin, 19-year-old Linda McClendon; and Martha's 2-year-old daughter, Natasha. The attack occurred at the McClendon family’s apartment in the Riverside Village complex.
On the evening of the murders, Granviel visited the McClendon apartment under the pretense of socializing. Once inside, he brandished a knife and began binding and gagging the family members, including the two young children. Granviel proceeded to rape Laura and Martha before systematically murdering each victim. Steven was stabbed multiple times and left in a closet, while Natasha was also fatally stabbed. The adult women were either stabbed or strangled. Granviel then stole money from the victims' purses before fleeing the scene.
Initially, two Mexican nationals were wrongfully arrested for the crime. Granviel, despite his close relationship with the family, was not considered a suspect until he confessed to the murders months later, following his arrest for additional crimes. In February 1975, he was apprehended after committing another series of violent offenses, including the rape and murder of two women and the sexual assault of others. Granviel confessed to the McClendon family murders during police questioning.
Kenneth Granviel was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. He was executed by lethal injection on February 27, 1996, at the Huntsville Unit in Texas. The brutal nature of his crimes, particularly the murder of young children like Steven Bernard McClendon, left an indelible mark on the Fort Worth community and highlighted the devastating impact of such violence on families and society.
