Shailesh Prabhu, a 29-year-old software engineer originally from India, disappeared on September 14, 1999, from Scotts Valley, California. That morning, Shailesh left home for work, where he was employed at Inprise Corporation. His wife, Shilpa, reported that their morning was routine; he had breakfast and mentioned plans for the couple to visit a temple that evening. However, he never returned home. Shailesh was last seen at his office, but he left behind his work satchel and had not answered his phone or emails by the time Shilpa tried to contact him.
Three days later, his abandoned car was discovered at the North Vista Point near the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. His wallet and credit cards were found inside, but there were no signs of Shailesh nearby. Despite searches by authorities, including the Coast Guard, no evidence suggested that he jumped from the bridge, leaving his disappearance a mystery.
Shailesh had been struggling with severe depression and was on medication at the time of his disappearance. His wife and family were concerned that without his medication, he could become disoriented or suffer memory loss. Friends and family members reported several unconfirmed sightings of Shailesh in the following months, but none led to his whereabouts. His case remains unresolved, and the circumstances of his disappearance continue to puzzle investigators.
