Henrietta Wright, a 35-year-old Black woman, was tragically found dead on August 12, 1986, in an alley near the 2500 block of West Vernon Avenue in Hyde Park, Los Angeles. Her body was discovered under a discarded mattress, and authorities determined that she had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. It was suspected that Wright may have been killed elsewhere and her body dumped in the alley.
At the time of her death, the Los Angeles Police Department had no suspects in her killing, and the case remained unsolved for years.
Wright's death was later linked to the infamous serial killer known as the "Grim Sleeper," who was responsible for a series of murders in Los Angeles spanning decades. The Grim Sleeper, identified as Lonnie David Franklin Jr., targeted vulnerable women, many of whom were Black and living in South Los Angeles. Franklin's modus operandi involved luring his victims with promises of drugs or other means, and then killing them, often with a small-caliber handgun. Wright is believed to have been the second of at least eleven victims attributed to Franklin during his reign of terror.
In July 2010, Franklin was arrested at his home in South Los Angeles after DNA evidence linked him to multiple murders, including Wright's. Prosecutors charged Franklin with ten counts of murder, and he was later convicted and sentenced to death. The case highlighted systemic issues in the investigation of crimes against marginalized communities, as many of Franklin's victims were initially dismissed as casualties of random violence or drug-related incidents. Wright's death, along with the deaths of other victims, became emblematic of the failures in addressing violence against Black women in Los Angeles during that era.
Franklin's conviction brought some measure of justice to the families of his victims, but the case also underscored the need for greater accountability and reform in law enforcement practices. Henrietta Wright's tragic death remains a poignant reminder of the importance of recognizing and addressing violence against vulnerable populations.
