In the early afternoon of January 26, 2022, a violent chain of events unfolded in St. Louis, Missouri, culminating in the death of 23-year-old Equan Hopson. The incident began when detectives spotted a white Toyota 4Runner linked to a homicide that had occurred earlier that morning in the city. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped away, initiating a high-speed pursuit that wove through traffic and eventually crossed into the suburb of Ferguson. The chase ended near West Florissant Avenue and Lang Drive after the SUV's driver lost control and the vehicle crashed.
As the occupants exited the disabled vehicle, the situation escalated into a shootout. According to police reports, Equan Hopson, a Black male, opened fire on the pursuing officers with a handgun. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, two St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers were struck and critically wounded. One of the injured officers, Colin Ledbetter, suffered life-threatening injuries but survived after emergency surgery. Officers returned fire, striking Hopson during the confrontation. He was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Following the shootout, police launched a manhunt for the other individuals who had fled the crashed SUV. Authorities quickly apprehended two suspects near the scene. August Burns, 23, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest; prosecutors alleged he was wearing an ammunition carrier with shotgun shells at the time of his capture. A second man, 35-year-old Clyde Thomas, was also arrested and charged with resisting arrest.
The investigation continued as detectives sought a fourth individual believed to have been the driver of the getaway vehicle. In March 2022, nearly two months after the fatal encounter, 23-year-old Johnny Lewis was identified as the final suspect. He was located and arrested in Las Vegas, Nevada, before being extradited back to Missouri. Lewis faced charges of resisting arrest by fleeing, creating a substantial risk of serious injury or death. While Hopson was the only fatality among the vehicle's occupants, the case drew significant attention due to the critical injuries sustained by the officers and the connection to the earlier homicide investigation.
