Todd Payton, an 11-year-old boy, was tragically murdered on November 13, 1972. He was one of the victims of Robert Frederick Carr III, a notorious American serial killer and pedophile. Carr, who was born on December 22, 1943, in Virginia, had a troubled childhood and a history of criminal behavior. He admitted to molesting more than a dozen children and was eventually convicted of multiple murders and sexual assaults.
On the day of the murder, Carr picked up Todd Payton and his friend Mark Wilson, also 11 years old, while they were hitchhiking from North Miami Beach. The inside back doors of Carr's car were disabled, and the trunk was filled with food, jars of petroleum jelly, and a shovel. Carr raped both boys and strangled Todd Payton. Four days later, he strangled Mark Wilson as well. After the murders, Carr drove to Mississippi and Louisiana, burying one boy in each state. Both boys were subsequently reported missing by their parents when they did not return home.
Carr's criminal activities did not end with the murders of Todd Payton and Mark Wilson. In 1973, he was convicted of rape in Connecticut but was paroled in 1976. Upon his release, he killed his fourth and final victim, 21-year-old Rhonda Holloway, before burying her body in a rural area. Carr was eventually apprehended on May 30, 1976, when a Metro police officer stumbled upon him raping a hitchhiker at knifepoint. During interrogation, Carr confessed to the murders of Todd Payton, Mark Wilson, Tammy Ruth Huntley, and Rhonda Holloway, providing detailed accounts of his crimes.
Carr was sentenced to life imprisonment, which he served until his death on July 6, 2007, at the Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Florida. His dark legacy as a dangerous child sexual predator and murderer remains a chilling reminder of the heinous acts he committed.
