In the winter of 1992, the discovery of multiple bodies in a derelict Highland Park hotel sent a chill through the community, uncovering the tragic death of 34-year-old Valerie Chalk. On February 17, 1992, her body, along with those of 23-year-old Juanita Hardy and another woman who remained unidentified for years, was found in separate rooms of the former Monterey Hotel. Relatives had reported Valerie missing in early November of the previous year after a warrant had been issued for her arrest. The grim finding at the hotel was a key point in a much larger and more terrifying series of events that had been unfolding across Highland Park and Detroit.
The investigation into these deaths and others led authorities to Benjamin Thomas Atkins, a man who would come to be known as 'The Woodward Corridor Killer.' Atkins was apprehended on August 21, 1992, on an unrelated rape charge after being identified by a previous victim. During a lengthy interrogation, he confessed to the murders of eleven women, including Valerie Chalk. His motive, he claimed, stemmed from a deep-seated hatred of women involved in prostitution. He detailed how he would lure his victims to abandoned buildings with offers of drugs, alcohol, or money before sexually assaulting and strangling them.
The trial of Benjamin Atkins began in January 1994, featuring testimony from over 150 witnesses, which included the grieving family members of his victims. After a four-month trial and three days of jury deliberations, Atkins was found guilty of eleven counts of first-degree murder and one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct. In April 1994, he was sentenced to eleven life sentences for his crimes. Benjamin Atkins died in prison from complications related to AIDS on September 17, 1997, closing a dark chapter for the communities he had terrorized.
