In the summer of 2010, the city of Flint, Michigan, was gripped by a series of violent and seemingly random attacks. It was during this time of fear and uncertainty that 43-year-old Darwin-Lafayette Marshall, an African American male, tragically lost his life. On the early morning of July 26, 2010, at approximately 1:25 a.m., Marshall was discovered with fatal stab wounds on Garland Street near West Fifth Avenue. An Army veteran and a father to two daughters, he was remembered by his mother as a wonderful person who was loved by many. He was also known for his angelic singing voice at the Ruth Street Church of God, a church founded by his grandfather.
The investigation into Marshall's death soon connected his case to a string of similar attacks in the area. The perpetrator, who became known as the 'Flint Serial Slasher,' targeted men in and around Genesee County. The assailant's method was to approach his victims asking for help before launching a brutal knife attack. The community was on edge as the number of victims grew, with the attacks appearing to be racially motivated as most of the victims were African American.
The reign of terror came to an end with the arrest of Elias Abuelazam on August 11, 2010. An Israeli national, Abuelazam was identified as the man behind the deadly spree that resulted in five deaths, including that of Darwin Marshall. Following his capture, Abuelazam was charged with multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.
Although directly charged with the murder of Darwin Marshall on October 21, 2010, prosecutors in Genesee County ultimately decided to focus on one key case to secure a conviction that would ensure Abuelazam remained behind bars for life. He was tried and convicted for the murder of Arnold Minor. Following this conviction, Abuelazam was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. As a result of this sentence, the Genesee County prosecutor's office chose not to pursue additional trials for the other murders, including the case of Darwin Marshall. Abuelazam is currently serving his life sentence at the Ionia Maximum Correctional Facility in Michigan.
