Newton Stewart, a 25-year-old police officer in El Paso, Texas, tragically lost his life on February 17, 1900. Stewart was the only officer on duty at the police station on Overland Street that night when a group of soldiers from Ft. Bliss attempted to break two fellow soldiers out of jail. The soldiers had been arrested for being drunk and disorderly. During the jailbreak attempt, Officer Stewart was shot by the soldiers.
