On June 4, 1903, City Marshal William R. Kinard, age 35, was tragically shot and killed in Eagle Lake, Texas. Marshal Kinard, who had served with the Eagle Lake Police Department for five years, was on his usual rounds when he responded to a disturbance at a local saloon.
