Jonathon Cain Segura, a 22-year-old male of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically lost his life on September 10, 2021, in Eagle Lake, Texas. Segura, who had recently returned from serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, was shot and killed while sleeping on the couch in his living room. The incident occurred when Dante Larenz Stevens, a 28-year-old man from Garwood, broke into Segura's home and fired four shots at him.
Stevens was later found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to life without
parole. The trial revealed that Stevens' actions were in retaliation for the death of his cousin, Keaton Hancock, who was shot and killed less than two hours before Segura. The jury deliberated for only two hours before reaching their verdict, and Segura's family expressed relief and gratitude for the justice served.
In addition to Stevens, two other suspects, Daegen Mendoza and Dontrae Johnson, were connected to the incident. Mendoza was sentenced to 10 years' probation for his involvement in the violent crime.
