On July 23, 1903, Officer Walter W. Stansbury, aged 33, of the Beaumont Police Department in Texas, was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance. The incident began when neighbors reported a disturbance at a residence around 11:00 a.m. When the first officer arrived, the suspect, known to the police as a desperate character who had previously shot his wife, fired at the officer with a Winchester rifle. The officer retreated to safety and awaited backup.
