John Morris Cain, a 31-year-old male police officer with the Houston Police Department, tragically died on August 4, 1911, in Houston, Texas. Officer Cain was shot and killed while attempting to arrest a suspect who had hopped onto a freight train. When Officer Cain called for the suspect to stop, the man turned and fired two shots, killing him instantly.
The suspect, later identified as Houston Sharp, fled the scene but was eventually arrested in 1915 for a series of burglaries and hold-ups.
Detective T.A. Binford worked tirelessly for over four years to solve the case. He managed to recover the firearm used in the murder and secure a confession from Houston Sharp, who had boasted about killing a police officer to fellow inmates. Sharp was found guilty of capital murder and sentenced to be executed by hanging on September 8, 1916.
