Detective Daryl Wayne Shirley, aged 34, was a dedicated officer with the Houston Police Department. On April 28, 1982, Detective Shirley was shot and killed while attempting to serve an arrest warrant at an apartment complex on Rolido Drive. The suspect, a 23-year-old man, resisted arrest and a struggle ensued. During the altercation, the suspect managed to shoot Detective Shirley. Shirley's body was later found hidden under a canopy in a parking garage.
The suspect was apprehended two days later after being turned in by a friend. He was initially convicted of murder and sentenced to death. However, this sentence was overturned, and he was eventually sentenced to life in prison as part of a plea deal. His first parole hearing is scheduled for December 19, 2038.
Detective Shirley is survived by his wife, Donna Shirley, his daughter, Sarah Michelle Shirley, his sons, Steven Wayne Shirley and Jason Allan Shirley, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Shirley. Shirley's dedication and sacrifice are remembered and honored by his family, friends, and fellow officers.
