Eddie Eugene Ulrich, a 40-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically killed on August 9, 1982, in Grand Prairie, Texas. Ulrich, who worked as a supervisor at the Western Transfer Company, was one of the victims in a horrific shooting spree carried out by John Felton Parish, a 49-year-old truck driver. The incident occurred in the central business district of Grand Prairie, where Parish, armed with multiple firearms, went on a rampage that resulted in the deaths of six people and injuries to
several others.
The events leading up to the shooting were rooted in a pay dispute between Parish and his employer, Western Transfer Company. Parish had been experiencing financial difficulties and felt mistreated by his supervisors, including Ulrich. On the morning of August 9, Parish entered the Western Transfer Company building to confront Ulrich about the payment issue. When the discussion did not go as Parish had hoped, he opened fire, killing Ulrich and two other employees, Martin Douglas Moran, 30, and Moody Charles Smith, 58.
After the initial shootings, Parish continued his rampage, targeting other locations in the area. He killed additional victims, including Wyvonne Kohler, 45, at the GM International Inc. office, and Dave Bahl and Rick Svoboda at the Jewel T warehouse. Parish also wounded several others during his spree. The violence only ended when Parish was killed by police officers following a high-speed chase and a shootout.
The aftermath of the shooting left the community in shock and mourning. The investigation into the incident revealed that Parish had no prior criminal record and was generally described as an easy-going person by his colleagues.
