During the transaction, Officer Schaefer, dressed in plain clothes, pulled her service weapon to protect a fellow undercover officer who was inside a vehicle. A uniformed officer, unaware that she was a fellow officer, mistakenly perceived her as a threat and fired his weapon. Officer Schaefer was struck once in the chest. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries at 8:10 p.m.
Officer Schaefer, a 33-year-old female, was married to Lieutenant Lyndon Schaefer, a supervisor in the Houston Police Department. She left behind two children, an 11-year-old daughter named Theresa and a 10-year-old son named Lyndon. Her funeral services were held at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Missouri City, Texas, followed by burial at Brookside Memorial Park in Houston.
The shooting was determined to be accidental, and no arrests were made in connection with her death. The uniformed officer who fired the fatal shot had acted under the belief that Officer Schaefer was a suspect threatening another officer.
