Deputy Sheriff Daniel Stephen Ray Jr., aged 20, was shot and killed on May 10, 1986, while on duty at the County Confinement Facility in Houston County, Georgia. The tragic incident occurred when a jail trustee, who had stolen a .357 caliber service weapon from a patrol car, approached Deputy Ray and shot him in the head without warning. Deputy Ray had only been with the Houston County Sheriff's Office for less than a year at the time of his death.
