Sergeant Joseph Daniel Bock, aged 40, was a dedicated officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department in Texas. On September 9, 1987, while attempting to arrest a speeding suspect near the Botanical Gardens, Sergeant Bock was tragically shot and killed. The suspect, who had an outstanding warrant and was on parole, managed to disarm Sergeant Bock and fired four shots, fatally wounding him.
The suspect then fled the scene but was later apprehended.
The suspect was initially sentenced to death, but on June 12, 2004, it was determined that he was mentally ill, and his sentence was commuted to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole. Sergeant Bock had served with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 13 years and was survived by his two daughters, mother, and two sisters. In his honor, a city park was named after him, located at 7327 Canadian Drive, 78414.
Sergeant Bock's death was a significant loss to the Corpus Christi community and the police department, and his legacy continues to be remembered and honored.
