On November 13, 1992, at approximately 2 p.m., 39-year-old Rita Kay Bertsch Wenzel, a white female, was at her workplace, Langham Creek High School in Cypress, Texas. Her estranged husband, 39-year-old Stephen Paul Wenzel, a white male, arrived at the school in his white Chevrolet van. A concerned co-worker informed Rita that Stephen was outside and urged her to remain indoors. Despite the warning, Rita chose to step outside to speak with him.
Tragically, during this encounter, Stephen fatally shot Rita before taking his own life.
Rita was born on July 10, 1953, and was 39 years old at the time of her death. She was laid to rest in Missoula Cemetery, located in Missoula, Montana.
Stephen Paul Wenzel was born on January 17, 1953, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He died on the same day as Rita, November 13, 1992, in Cypress, Texas.
The incident was a murder-suicide, with Stephen Wenzel as the perpetrator. Given that the assailant also died at the scene, no arrests were made, and there were no other suspects involved in this tragic event.
