Mei Xie, a 49-year-old woman of Chinese ethnicity, tragically lost her life on February 3, 2014, in Cypress, Texas. She was killed along with her husband, Maoye Sun, and their two sons, 9-year-old Timothy and 7-year-old Titus, in what became known as the Cypress massacre. The family was found shot execution-style in their home, with all four victims suffering gunshot wounds to the head.
The case remained unsolved for nearly nine years until a breakthrough in September 2022, when Feng Lu,
a 58-year-old man and former coworker of Maoye Sun, was arrested in San Francisco after returning from China. Lu was charged with capital murder in connection with the killings. Investigators linked Lu to the crime through newly tested DNA evidence, which showed his DNA on a purse belonging to Mei Xie. This contradicted Lu's previous statements to investigators, where he claimed not to know the family or their whereabouts.
Authorities revealed that the motive for the killings might have been related to a workplace dispute. Lu had reportedly sought a promotion at Cameron International, where both he and Sun worked, but believed that Sun had made derogatory comments about him to their coworkers, which Lu thought hindered his chances of getting the promotion. Investigators found inconsistencies in Lu's statements and evidence suggesting that he had purchased a handgun shortly before the killings and returned it without the barrel shortly after.
The arrest of Feng Lu brought some closure to the case and provided a sense of justice for the victims' families and the community. The Houston Chinese Alliance, among other community groups, expressed relief and gratitude that the case was finally resolved after years of uncertainty.
The tragic loss of Mei Xie and her family remains a somber reminder of the impact of workplace conflicts and the importance of resolving disputes peacefully.
