Michael Ray Eakin III, a 25-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a dedicated police officer with the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office in Houston, Texas. On September 29, 1998, while on patrol, he conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle occupied by four passengers. During the stop, one of the passengers, a 17-year-old juvenile, exited the car and fled into a wooded area.
Deputy Constable Eakin pursued the suspect on foot, and a struggle ensued.
During the altercation, the juvenile pulled out a handgun and shot Deputy Eakin twice, once in the throat and once in the head. The physical evidence indicated that the suspect grabbed Eakin by the throat before shooting him. The other passengers in the vehicle were arrested by responding deputies. The 17-year-old suspect was later sentenced to death on May 25, 1999. However, in March 2005, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the execution of criminals who committed their crimes as juveniles was unconstitutional, and the suspect's sentence was commuted to life in prison.
Deputy Constable Eakin had served with the Harris County Precinct 1 Constable's Office for three years and was survived by his fiancée, mother, father, and family who had served as his guardians when he was a teenager. His death was a tragic loss for his loved ones and the community, and he is remembered as a hero who gave his life in the line of duty.
