Mark Louis Stephenson, a 31-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a Deputy Sheriff in Atascosa County, Texas. On October 12, 1999, he responded to a call at a mobile home in Jourdanton, Texas, where he was ambushed and shot by Jeremiah Engleton, a 21-year-old man. Engleton had been arrested earlier that day for family violence and had called the sheriff's office requesting officers be sent to his residence.
When Deputy Stephenson and another deputy arrived at the scene, Engleton opened fire on them from a concealed position in the brush. Despite the arrival of State Trooper Terry Miller, who was also shot and killed, Engleton continued to fire until he was eventually apprehended. Stephenson and Miller were both killed in the line of duty, and Engleton was later identified as the shooter.
Following the incident, Kenneth Vodochodsky, a 19-year-old, was arrested and charged with capital murder and attempted capital murder for his involvement in planning and carrying out the ambush. The tragic event is remembered as one of the most horrific nights in Atascosa County history, and it led to a significant outpouring of grief and support from the community.
