Mark Louis Stephenson, a 31-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a Deputy Sheriff in Atascosa County, Texas. On October 12, 1999, he responded to a call at a mobile home in Jourdanton, Texas, where he was ambushed and shot by Jeremiah Engleton, a 21-year-old man. Engleton had been arrested earlier that day for family violence and had called the sheriff's office requesting officers be sent to his residence.
