A promising future was tragically cut short on the night of March 6, 2009, in Kansas City, Missouri, when 17-year-old Darreon Murray-Brown was shot and killed. A senior at Hogan Prep High School, Murray-Brown was a talented basketball player with dreams of attending college.
On that Friday evening, Darreon was a passenger in a car with friends, traveling on Interstate 70 near Van Brunt Boulevard. In a sudden and violent act, another vehicle pulled alongside them and an occupant opened fire. Darreon, who was sitting in the back seat, was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. Another individual in the car was also hit and suffered paralysis.
The parents of the slain teenager, Latrice Murray and Rondy Brown, were thrust into a nightmare. They would later recount the shock and horror of receiving the call that their son had been shot after a basketball game and a subsequent party. Their preparations for his college enrollment were cruelly replaced by the need to plan his funeral. They remembered their son as an outgoing and well-loved young man who had never been in any trouble and had a bright future ahead with interest from some fifteen colleges.
In the years following her son's death, Latrice Murray became a vocal advocate against violence, joining the Kansas City chapter of Mothers in Charge, a support group for families affected by homicide. She has shared the story of her son's unsolved murder to raise awareness and offer support to others who have experienced similar tragedies. Despite the passage of time, the case of Darreon Murray-Brown's murder remains unsolved, with no arrests made and no suspects publicly identified. The senseless act of violence that ended a young life continues to leave a family searching for answers and justice.
