Alberto Albert Vasquez, a 32-year-old Hispanic male, was tragically killed on May 22, 2001, in Houston, Texas. Officer Vasquez was patrolling a housing complex at 6200 Marinette Drive during an off-duty security assignment when he was shot and killed. The incident occurred at approximately 10:30 PM, after he and three other officers had arrested five suspects on narcotics violations and were escorting them to the security office.
Three of the suspects had been handcuffed, while the remaining two were handcuffed together, with one of them using a crutch due to a leg injury. As the officers and suspects entered the security office, gunshots were heard outside. One of the officers immediately exited the office and observed the suspect with the crutch shooting Officer Vasquez. The suspect then opened fire on the other officer, striking him in the chest. Despite being critically wounded, the officer managed to return fire and struck the suspect in the leg. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with capital murder and attempted capital murder. He was sentenced to life in prison on October 23, 2002, after the jury became deadlocked on whether to sentence him to death.
Officer Vasquez had served with the Houston Police Department for seven years. He is survived by his wife, two sons, ages ten months and six years, and his parents. The incident led to a lawsuit against the owners of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. The plaintiffs, including Officer Vasquez's family and the wounded officer, sought damages from the complex owners, arguing that negligence played a role in the shooting. However, a Harris County jury decided that the complex owners were not to blame, and the responsibility for the incident was shared between the convicted murderer and the two police officers involved. The jury awarded more than $12 million to the wounded officer and Officer Vasquez's family, although they were unlikely to collect any money from the convicted murderer, who was serving two life sentences for the shooting. The case highlighted the dangers faced by police officers and the complexities of assigning responsibility in such tragic incidents.
