Ashley Mason, an 11-year-old girl from Mansfield, Texas, tragically lost her life on August 27, 2001. She was one of the victims in a series of murders committed by Terry Lee Hankins, her stepfather. Terry Lee Hankins, an Arlington auto mechanic, was
arrested on August 28, 2001, after a five-hour standoff with police. He later confessed to the murders of his wife, stepchildren, and other family members. Hankins' confession led to the discovery of the bodies of his half-sister, Pearl "Sissy" Sevenstar, 20, and his father, Earnie Hankins, 55, who had been killed earlier in 2000.
During the trial, prosecutors presented evidence of Hankins' troubled upbringing and his history of abuse and violence. Hankins' diary entries revealed his disdain for his wife and stepchildren, as well as his troubled past. He was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death. Terry Lee Hankins was executed by lethal injection on June 2, 2009.
