Christopher Kevin James, a 34-year-old police officer from Dallas, Texas, was tragically killed on November 25, 2001. Officer James was working an off-duty security job at a nightclub on Spangler Road when a fight broke out inside the club. Along with three other officers, he was involved in removing several individuals from the premises following the altercation.
As one of the patrons was being escorted outside, he pulled out a handgun and opened fire, striking Officer James and another officer. Officer James was fatally wounded in the incident.
The shooter, Licho Escamilla, was apprehended at the scene after a brief exchange of gunfire with the other officers. Escamilla was later sentenced to death in October 2002 for the murder of Officer James. He was executed by lethal injection on October 14, 2015. The execution took place in Huntsville, Texas, where Escamilla was pronounced dead 18 minutes after the lethal injection began. Before his execution, Escamilla addressed the family of Officer James, expressing his remorse and asking for God's blessing on their hearts.
Officer James had been with the Dallas Police Department for six years at the time of his death. He was married and had one daughter. His dedication to his duty and his ultimate sacrifice were honored by his colleagues and the community. The incident left a lasting impact on the Dallas Police Department and the community, as they mourned the loss of a dedicated officer who had given his life in the line of duty.
