Gregory Dean Stewart, a 32-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on May 15, 2006, in San Antonio, Texas. Stewart, who had recently returned from Iraq with the Texas Army National Guard, was a dedicated SWAT team member with the Beeville Police Department. On the night of May 7, 2006, while off duty and attending a weekend drill with his Army reserve unit, Stewart was assaulted and shot three times by an armed man attempting to rob him.
Despite his injuries, Stewart managed to provide a description of the shooter to responding officers before being transported to a local hospital. He remained in the hospital for eight days before succumbing to his wounds.
The incident occurred in the 4800 block of Fredericksburg Road in San Antonio, where Stewart and a friend were leaving a club. An armed man exited an SUV and demanded their wallets. Stewart, attempting to subdue the assailant, drew attention away from his friend. The assailant opened fire as he fled the scene, striking Stewart. As a result of Stewart's detailed description, three suspects were apprehended and charged with capital murder. In September 2007, one of the suspects pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of murder and was sentenced to 35 years in prison.
Stewart's death was a significant loss to his family, friends, and colleagues. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Beeville Police Department for four years. Stewart is survived by his son, parents, sister, and two brothers. His dedication to his duty and his bravery in the face of danger are remembered and honored by those who knew him.
