Paul Steven Habelt, a 63-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a dedicated law enforcement officer with 43 years of service. On May 17, 2007, Deputy Sheriff Habelt responded to a domestic disturbance call in Payne Springs, Texas, alongside Deputy Sheriff Tony Ogburn and Deputy Kevin Harris. Upon arrival, they were met with gunfire from the suspect, Randall Wayne Mays, who used a high-powered rifle.
