John Scott Gardner, a 30-year-old police officer from Odessa, Texas, tragically lost his life on September 8, 2007. Gardner, who was born on June 7, 1977, in Odessa, had served with the Odessa Police Department for over four years. He was responding to a domestic violence call when the incident occurred. Gardner, along with Corporal Arlie Jones and Corporal Abel Marquez, arrived at the scene where the victim reported that her husband had hit her.
The officers attempted to gain entry into the home through the back door after being unable to do so through the front door. As they did, the suspect opened fire, killing Corporal Jones and Corporal Gardner, and critically wounding Corporal Marquez.
The suspect, Larry Neil White, 58, of Odessa, was later shot and taken into custody after a four-hour standoff. White faced multiple capital murder charges for the shooting of the three officers. Unfortunately, Corporal Marquez, who was critically wounded, remained unconscious and passed away four days later. White, however, did not stand trial as he passed away from cancer on May 31, 2011.
The incident had a profound impact on the Odessa community, with memorials and tributes held in honor of the fallen officers. Gardner's dedication to his duty and his ultimate sacrifice were remembered and honored by his colleagues, friends, and family.
