On November 5, 2009, Lieutenant Colonel Juanita Lee Warman, aged 55, was tragically killed in the Fort Hood shooting incident. Warman, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a native of Pittsburgh, had been at Fort Hood for only 24 hours to process for deployment to Iraq. She was highly respected for her expertise in treating post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury.
Warman had served in the Army for 25 years, both on active duty and in the reserves.
The shooting was carried out by Nidal Hasan, an Army major who was later stripped of his rank. Hasan, who was preparing for deployment himself, opened fire in the Soldier Readiness Processing Center, killing 13 people and wounding 30 others. Warman, along with another military member, heroically threw a fellow soldier to the ground, saving his life, but she did not survive.
Hasan was arrested at the scene and later convicted in 2013 of 13 counts of murder and attempted murder. He is currently awaiting execution on death row. The incident was described as an act of domestic terrorism, and it deeply affected the military community.
Warman is remembered as a hero and a dedicated medical professional who made significant contributions to the care of soldiers. She is survived by her husband, five children, and eight grandchildren. Her legacy continues to be honored by her family, friends, and the military community.
