Leila, along with her 9-year-old sister Zeinab and her father Rouhad Ahamd Ezzeddine, was found dead in their home. The incident was initially suspected to be a murder-suicide, with Rouhad Ahamd Ezzeddine believed to have killed his daughters before taking his own life.

PFC Carla Santisteban, the mother of the two girls, had recently returned from an overseas deployment when the incident occurred.
